Oral history interviews with Elazar Behar, Feb.-Mar., 1982.

Behar begins the interview by discussing his parents, his family's life on the Greek island of Rhodes, and their immigration, first to New York (1917) and then to Seattle, Washington (1918). He talks at length about the work of his father, David Behar, for Congregation Ezra Bessaroth synagogue as haham, hazzan, counselor, community representative, and dispenser of aid. Behar discusses various aspects of the development of the Sephardic community in Seattle: social, religious, political, and economic. He describes in great detail how the Sephardim celebrated the Jewish holidays, the Sabbath, and family and personal celebrations. He also discusses at length the affairs of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth, such as its move to Seward Park. Additional topics include the purchase of the Sephardic cemetery, the funeral of Rabbi Avraham Maimon of Sephardic Bikur Holim, attempts to merge the Sephardic congregations, the demise of the Ahavat Achim Congregation, his father's relationships with Seattle's Ashkenazic rabbis, Sephardic Jewish education in Seattle, thwarted attempts to modernize or Americanize services, and Sephardic contributions to the larger Jewish community.
